Storyline
The chief mercenary for the British East India Company, being double crossed by his former employer, has made his way to the American Colonies. Working to redeem his name, William Reynolds (Andrew Cheney) now hides behind a different mask in hopes of thwarting his former employer. As his past life closes in on him, Will must somehow gain the trust and the help of his beloved Charlotte, a woman he has been lying to, as well as a colonial intellectual by the name of Ben Franklin. All the while he races against time to defuse a plot that could have devastating effect on the birth of a new nation.
Reviews
Beyond the Mask has been promoted as an action-packed Christian historical thriller (which sets it apart). And it delivers on all points with extra surprises in store. The story starts at a full run and quickly reveals the plight of Will - the main character. His general situation is a familiar one - similar to many traditional stories. This makes it easier for younger viewers to follow (also note that the dialog is intelligent, clear, and entirely expletive-free). But plot twists (also clear and easy to understand) keep things interesting. One feature that stands out is the unusual pacing of the story. It supports a passionate telling (drama and emotion when meaning is being expressed and action when conflict results) rather than formula (introduce sub-plot, incinerate something, resolve). The result is a very natural feel to the narrative - and one that builds empathy for the heroes. Each character's actions seem likely and sensible. Will and Charlotte's characters develop quickly and accomplish a
chemistry that is essential to delivering the movies main themes. As he always does, John Rhys-Davies brings a depth and authenticity to the villainous Charles Kemp. Alan Madlane's portrayal of Ben Franklin is a fantastic surprise - the embodiment of innumerable quotes and stories while remaining fresh and unpredictable. A clear Gospel message is presented - also with a natural, matter-of-fact quality that makes it winsome. Historical references are abundant and well integrated (and lightly footnoted during the credits). The movie is truly beautiful thanks to well-chosen, authentic locations, great costuming, and skilled cinematography. Finally, the extra treats include "never thought of that" details in the setting of the story and cool inventions of various sorts that support the telling well without becoming gimmicky. All of these elements are fitted together seamlessly into a thoroughly comfortable and enjoyable tale that the whole family can share together. I look forward to the disc release.
