Storyline
Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency's most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis.
Reviews
I feel it's hard to review a comedy seeing as there are only so many ways of saying either I laughed a lot or I didn't laugh at all. Spy lies (as many things do) somewhere in the middle. There are two very clear highlights in this film. One of them is very rude yet undeniably hilarious Italian spy played by the guy called Pete in Shaun of the Dead (Nick Frost and Simon Pegg's roommate) most of his jokes work very well though some are far too crude and crass for my liking. The other highlight was a massive and welcome surprise- Jason Statham. It's hard to believe I'm actually praising Statham but
he really is side-splittingly funny in several scenes. One of the things I didn't like was the unnecessary gore and relentless swearing that seemed to be a joke in itself. Maybe it's just me, but hearing someone say the f-word really loudly just isn't funny. There is also a moment roughly in the middle of the film where a gratuitous and graphic visual joke is made that I thought was completely unnecessary and left me shocked that it made its way into the film (you'll definitely know it when you see it). Spy is sporadically very funny but lacks the consistency required for a 7 and to be honest is just too rude and crass for me. 6/10
