Storyline

Ten women find themselves in a vacant mansion on Spektor Island in December, 1972. Each believes she's traveled to the house on business, but they all agree that something seems strange. For one thing, the entire house is full of pictures and statues of pigs. The women all come from drastically different walks of life. None of them would have chosen to spend the night together in such an eerie place, but the last ferry for the mainland has just left, and a terrible storm is rolling in. Trying to make the best of an unpleasant situation, they raid the mansion's wine cellar and throw a party. As the night creeps on, however, it becomes clear that someone--or something--has lied to get them in the house. It's not long before someone mentions that Spektor Island is supposed to be haunted. Of course, no one in the house believes in ghosts. At least, not until the first murder. What do an actress, a religious zealot, a renegade, a coed, a model, a singer, a medium, a real-estate investor, a...

Reviews

...was the title of a glowing review from a reviewer with no other history here on IMDb. Same old story.

I see a lot of bad films. In fact, I've made quite a habit of it. But rarely do they make me want to hurt myself. This film not only achieves the "self-harm" seal of disapproval, but has motivated me to once again, take aim.

It's not as if this is a typical pig in a poke scenario. I watched the trailer. I knew what I was getting into. But as always, I attempted to keep an open mind. And why wouldn't I? At least a dozen times now, I've begun a sucktastic film, or at least one which I clearly understood to be dreadful, but which turned into a mildly entertaining film. You never really know. So off I went.

Child-level directioncheck. Horrid writingcheck. Sub-amateur actorscheck. Soccer-mom level DSLR "cinematography"check. Sound/editing/art-direction ultra-ineptitudecheck.

I liked the poster though, and that's the only thing these people got right. I've learned, despite it sounding ridiculous, that posters do indeed give a small amount of insight as to the quality of the production. At least, once in a while. However, in this case, it was untrue. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

Many of the worst films I've seen over the last few years are from people who don't have nearly the experience of those behind this stool-sample of a film. They have worked on a ton of films. So it's even more surprising this is so incontinence-inducingly horrible. Aren't we supposed to get better with each screenplay, and each production? It almost takes determination and premeditation to stay at the same level of sucktitude for dozens of projects. Cmon people! Make that silk purse from the sow's ear! DO IT!

Pearls before swine? Maybe. Or, maybe not. Perhaps they'll do better on the next one? Perhaps a new film maker will see this film (or this review), and boldly declare.Pigs will fly, before I make a film that dreadful! And if so, my efforts will not been in vain.

Step up your game, y'all. I know my reviews often sound like the squealings of a stuck piggy, but it does make me as happy as a slopped hog when I dream of a hypothetical difference I might have made on an impressionable young would-be. Who wants their project to look and feel as clumsy as a hog on ice? So again I saystep it up, yo!

Also, I desperately wanted to fit "Content as a dead pig in the sunshine" into this review, as it is my favorite swine-idiom, but there simply was no opportunity.
